HAVE / GET SOMETHING DONE

Have something done And Get something done

are both used to refer to actions which are done for the subject rather than by the subject. Causative verbs are used instead of passive verbs to show that the subject causes the action to be done.

1. Have something done

I don´t know how to repair cars, so I´m having mine repaired at the garage round the corner.

2. Get something done

I really must  get my eyes tested . I´m sure I need glasses. Get your hair cut !

NOTE : The differences between Have and get something done are that have is slightly more formal than

get, and that Get is more frequent than have in the imperative form.

have + something (the object) + past participle

In this construction, like in all passive sentences, we need to use the past participle.

Remember that for regular verbs, this is the same as the simple past.

However, for irregular verbs, the past participle can be different!

Be sure to review them and use the correct form of the verb in passive constructions.

Example:

• Jeremy's car is in terrible condition! He is going to have his car fixed. He hopes it won't be too expensive!
• I have my business taken care of. (Somebody is taking care of my business.)

• He has his dog walked. (Somebody walks his dog.

• I thing you should have that coat cleaned soon.
• Jill repaired the roof. (she repaired her self)

Exercise :

Use the words in brackets to complete the sentence. Use the structure “have something down”.

1. We are having the house painted  (the house / paint)  at the moment.
2. I lost my key. I’ll have to have another key made (another key / make)
3. when was the last time you had your hair cut (your hair / cut)?.
4. This coat is dirty. I must have it cleaned  (it / clean).
5. You look different.  Did you have your hair cat (you / your hair / cut)?
